Heat from a crematorium will be used to warm a leisure centre and swimming pool in Worcestershire in a controversial green scheme expected to be approved tonight. The Abbey Stadium leisure centre in Redditch will use waste heat from neighbouring Redditch Crematorium to conserve energy and costs. But the proposal, the first of its kind in the UK, has divided opinion and been described as “sick”, “eerie” and “insensitive”.
The Conservative council leader, Carole Gandy, said she expects the proposal will be passed by councillors this evening after its executive committee unanimously recommended going ahead with the project last week. The use of waste heat energy is good practice and very innovative. Unison called on Redditch council yesterday to reverse its likely decision. Roger McKenzie, a regional secretary for Unison West Midlands, who has described the heating method as “an insult to local residents”, said: “It’s never too late for the council to reconsider its proposals.
A controversial plan to re-use energy generated by a crematorium incinerator to heat a public swimming pool has been given the go-ahead by councillors. When the plans were first announced last month they were attacked by a local funeral directors as ‘strange and eerie’ and ‘a bit sick’. Eerie: Redditch Council has given the go ahead for plans to heat a public swimming pool in by plugging it into a crematorium. But work on the link between the Worcestershire town’s crematorium and the nearby Abbey Leisure Centre, which is being redeveloped, will now begin in the summer.
It will use the heat from the incinerators, which can reach C 1,F , rather than letting it escape into the atmosphere.

We hired the Lavender Barn for a family funeral wake after a service at Redditch Crematorium. The venue was perfect. It was a good size for 26 of us and well decorated. The staff were very professional and helpful. They gave a lot of time to make sure we had everything we needed. They were well organised and considerate.

Wychavon District Council gave consent for the new crematorium at Fladbury Cross on the A44 by a majority of 12 votes to two, at a planning meeting last Thursday. Once built, the new facility will stage up to 1, funerals per year, averaging around four per day, giving Vale residents more local choice. The crematorium will also ease pressures on crematoria in Worcester and Redditch, which are both significantly busier than the average single chapel crematorium, being 33 per cent and 23 per cent busier respectively.
The lack of capacity at the these crematoria often causes delays of three weeks in being able to book a time for a funeral, and further distress is suffered by families pressurised into limiting the length of funeral services to make way for other funeral parties. The new crematorium will reduce these waiting times, especially during winter months, when the death rate is higher — which was highlighted by local funeral directors as being a particular problem.
Westerleigh Group estimates 70, people in the Wychavon district will, for the first time, have a crematorium they can reach in under half an hour. The majority of councillors welcomed the plans for the new crematorium, however there concerns raised on the impact the crematorium would have on traffic on the A44 and in Fladbury village. The A44 is a fast moving road and traffic certainly will need to slow down. Crematorium plan is given the go-ahead by planning chiefs.
